Job Description

The salary for this role is Β£67,023 (inclusive of a Specialist Allowance). Onsite working is expected for 3 days each week, however, we support requests for flexible working.

This role is based at Culham.

This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions and possibly a search of open source data.

The Role

Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to shape the future of fusion energy? Join our team as an Engineering Manager, where you will provide technical and project leadership on high-impact projects, influencing both the organisation and external collaborators.

The specific role you will be assigned to is Deputy Engineering Manager for the Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP) Heating and Current Drive (HCD) System. STEP aims for a prototype fusion plant, targeting first operations around 2040. The HCD system as designed would be the largest microwave system built in the world to date; this role works alongside the STEP HCD Engineering Manager to design the system, and manage the research and development necessary to deliver the system.

No prior fusion or HCD system experience is required for this role. With broad expertise in managing and delivering complex engineering projects, you will coordinate teams to develop technical solutions, designs, and manage technology research and development. This role offers the chance to drive innovation while making a meaningful contribution to cutting-edge fusion energy advancements.

Key Accountabilities:

Oversee major fusion system projects from concept to implementation for UKAEA’s facilities and future fusion devices, managing complex integrated solutions across multiple disciplines.

Define and manage project scope, budget, and schedule, acting as the technical lead to make high-value make vs buy decisions and ensuring timely delivery within specifications.

Advocate systems engineering principles, ensure compliance with relevant codes and legislation, and manage all technical activities while coordinating resources effectively.

Define and implement organizational and technical improvements, influencing policies and standards within the project engineering discipline.

Mentor and develop junior engineers, facilitating knowledge transfer and using coaching and mentoring to build expertise across the team.

Act as an independent reviewer for UKAEA projects, ensuring quality and compliance, while building and maintaining strong relationships with external stakeholders, including laboratories, universities, and suppliers.

Identify business development opportunities and contribute to proposals, budgets, and business cases for future projects.

Qualifications

Essential:

Degree or equivalent level in relevant STEM subject with demonstrable engineering experience.
Experience in leading a (preferably multidisciplinary) engineering team.
Ability to manage technical stakeholders.
Experience in delivering complex technical projects.
Chartered Status with relevant Engineering Institutions or equivalent experience.

Desirable:

Commercial awareness, project and budget management experience.

Integration and/or systems engineering experience.
Experience in delivering complex technical projects within high-hazard and/or highly regulated environments.
Experience working in a Research and Development environment and/or organisation.
