What You'll Do

As a Windows Desktop Architect, you will be responsible for implementing and maintaining solutions in support of a national security mission to maintain the safety, security, and effectiveness of the United States nuclear weapons stockpile.  Working as part of the IS&S organization’s IT Operations team, the Windows Desktop Architect position offers you the ability to install, manage, upgrade, and maintain existing Windows based infrastructure in a large, distributed network environment.   In addition, you will work with IT engineering and project management to implement new technologies.  

You will also be responsible for configuring user access, maintaining the stability of the system and working with customers or other IT professionals to resolve issues or implement new capability.

• Designs and defines system architecture for new or existing complex computer systems, primarily residing in the Windows Desktop Infrastructure. 
• Develop and maintain Windows Desktop ‘golden image’ installation packages.
• Develop and maintain software installation and update packages for third-party software.
• Perform monitoring and troubleshooting of Windows systems and servers.
• Provide after-hours support for emergencies and occasional weekend maintenance.
• Develop and maintain current operational procedures, user documentation, and user training materials applicable to the supported systems.
• Work with IT project management organization and the Chief Technology Office to deliver solutions on schedule

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering/science/information technology discipline with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience
  • OR Master’s degree in engineering/science/information technology discipline.
  • OR Ten or more years of relevant education, training, and/or progressive experience may be considered to satisfy educational and years-of-experience requirements for this posting. For postings on the Engineering, Science and IT Ladder, in lieu of a technical bachelor's degree, the Operations Professional Ladder may be considered.
  • Strong understanding of the current Microsoft Windows Operating Systems (server and desktop OS’s)
  • Strong understanding of patch management systems (SCCM, WSUS, etc.)
  • Strong understanding of the interactions between applications, operating systems, and third-party software
  • Understanding of virtual technologies such as Citrix Desktop and VMWare Horizon
  • Understanding of Server & Desktop administration, including high-availability and server clustering.

Preferred Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering/science/information technology discipline with a minimum of four years of relevant experience
  • OR Master's degree in engineering/science/information technology discipline with a minimum of two years of relevant experience.
  • In-depth understanding of information technology systems in a highly distributed computing environment.
  • Virtual computing environments, including desktops and servers.
  • Backup and recovery of physical and virtual computing environments.
  • Scripting skills.
  • Securing hardware and software components.
  • Enterprise storage subsystems, including Storage Area Networks (SAN) and Network Attached Storage (NAS) hardware and protocols.
  • Deploying applications across a large network.
  • Ability to present technical and operational information clearly and effectively through the oral and written word, solve complex technical problems, and be alert to changes that may affect the security and operational environment of systems.

Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.

Position may require entry into Materials Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (HRP). If HRP is required, candidate must complete a counterintelligence-scope polygraph, pursuant to 10CFR 709. Medical requirements may apply.
