DESCRIPTION:
The Senior Nuclear Medicine Technologist’s key responsibilities include performing clinical duties and day-to-day planning, organizing and co-ordination of the workflow in Nuclear Medicine in conjunction with the Charge Technologist. The Senior Nuclear Medicine Technologist will assist in equipment and supply purchases and will work with the Charge and/or Manager of Imaging Services to develop and keep policies, procedures, and guidelines current. The Senior Nuclear Medicine Technologist will be responsible for developing and maintaining new hire packages for staff and overseeing and directing the work of students. They will ensure that all work of assigned staff and students meets accuracy and reliability standards and requirements. The Senior Nuclear Medicine Technologist will advocate for and support continuous quality improvement in the department, with a strong focus on equipment utilization, efficient workflows, and management of cases. The Senior Technologist can act as the Radiation Safety Officer, Alternate Radiation Safety Officer or Radiation Safety Technologist and ensure compliance of the Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging Department with CNSC regulations.

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

  1. Performs clinical duties/examinations in as a Nuclear Medicine and PET technologist.

 

  1. Monitors, maintains, and coaches Technologists. Provides guidance to staff regarding expectations of work and clarification of imaging practices that impact patient care. Communicates effectively with all staff to ensure a clear understanding. Oversees and organizes the workflow of the Technologists, ensuring department processes and protocols are followed at all times. Works with team members to address and resolve conflict in the workplace. Ensures non-service recipient workload is captured and shared as required. Responsible for trouble-shooting equipment performance issues and organizing servicing as needed.

 

  1. Following the orientation guidelines, orients and onboards new staff and students in the area with documentation required. Ensures regular evaluations and feedback are provided to new team members to encourage learning and growth. Oversees the training of Technologists in Nuclear Medicine.

 

  1. Can act as Radiation Safety Officer, Alternate Radiation Safety Officer or Radiation Safety Technologist for KHSC NSRD License.
  • Monitors compliance of CNSC radiation safety regulations and compliance to KHSC Radiation Safety Manuals.
  • Communicates with the CNSC regarding radiation safety issues.
  • Responsible for CNSC compliance reports (yearly), license renewals (every 5 years) and DAF reports (as needed).
  • Develops and provides education on radiation safety issues for Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging and other KHSC staff (ES, Receiving) according to schedules laid out in the RSM.
  • Develops, maintains and performs internal inspections.
  • Participates as an active member of the KHSC Radiation Safety Committee by attending meetings, communicating radiation safety events to the committee and performing tasks and policy reviews at the request of the committee and the signing officer.
  • Ensures policies and procedures are in place to reduce radiation exposure to workers and public to acceptable limits outlined in regulations from the CNSC, HARP and Occupation Health and Safety Acts as well as aligning to the ALARA principle.
  • Ensures NMMI staff members are delegated as Nuclear Energy Workers and that appropriate monitoring is in effect.
  • Reviews reports of occupational exposure, and follow-up as required by CNSC and hospital standards.
  • Assesses the radiation safety program to evaluate whether improvements are needed, and implement any recommended changes.
  • Develops and implements programs to inspect and critically review the conduct of licensed activities, the adequacy of locations and the facilities where radioactive materials are used and stored, and the adequacy of personnel training and safety procedures
  • Be available for consultation on radiation safety matters with management and staff and report to the Radiation Safety Committee any radiation safety issues.
  • Implement any actions required to correct any deficiencies identified as a result of inspections by the CNSC, Occupational Health and Safety or the Ministry of Long Term Care.

 

  1. Partners with bookings to coordinate patient appointments as needed. Liaises with PET to ensure all areas are adequately staffed.  Makes arrangements to help short-staffed areas if required and possible. Liaises with Radiologists and other hospital staff to ensure that patients are cared for in a timely fashion. Regularly communicates with Charge Technologist and Manager aligned with the area regarding operations.

 

  1. Maintains an active communication structure with the Radiologists regarding protocol optimization, quality review of images, etc.

 

  1. Monitors compliance of CNSC radiation safety regulations and compliance to KHSC Radiation Safety Manuals.

 

  1. Oversees and directs the work of students in conjunction with the Clinical Coordinator.

 

  1. Actively participants in any change management strategies and continuous improvement initiatives.

 

  1. Assists in the development, maintenance and regular review of Policies, Procedures, Guidelines and Imaging Protocol Manuals.

 

  1. Supports research studies in Nuclear Medicine.

 

  1. Participates in the selection of equipment and supplies.  Monitors and orders inventory of supplies on a regular basis. Provides an active review and input on equipment and product needs.

 

  1. Represents the modality on committees.

 

  1. Monitors preventative maintenance program and ensures accommodation of patient bookings around PM Schedule.  Includes ensuring that field service is kept informed of equipment issues with documentation required. Coordinates routine and emergency equipment service while maintaining equipment maintenance logs.

 

  1. Assist the Manager with preparation of Performance Evaluations.           

 

  1. Perform other related duties consistent with the job classification as required.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduate from a recognized accredited school of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging Technology
  • Radiation Safety Officer certificate or willingness to pursue one
  • Transportation of Dangerous Goods Certificate
  • Current registration with the CMRITO
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist or PET Technologist with one year experience as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist within the last 5 years
  • Experience operating Nuclear Medicine scanning equipment and accessory equipment.
  • Competency in evaluating and building Nuclear Medicine protocols and sequences.
  • Medical terminology.
  • Demonstrated ability with above average written and oral communication skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with a high level of professionalism in interpersonal relations.
  • Evidence of strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize, work under pressure, and show flexibility.
  • Must have strong independent decision-making skills with a high level of initiative.
  • Discretion and maturity in handling confidential matters.
  • Demonstrated continuous improvement development.
  • Demonstrated computer knowledge.
  • Proven ability to attend work regularly.
  • Self-reliant, ability to function independently and interact effectively with others.
