Rolls Royce Submarines currently has 2 exciting opportunities for either Radiation Protection Advisers (RPAs) Radioactive Waste Advisors and Health Physicists (HPs) with varying degrees of experience to join Rolls-Royce Submarines Limited (RRSL) in Derby.

The work of the Safety, Security and Licencing Authority Radiation Protection team is to develop Radiation and Radioactive Waste Policy and provide Radiation Protection and Radioactive Waste governance by following and developing processes. These ensure that RRSL is compliant company standards and with requirements for operating 2 nuclear Licensed Sites at Raynesway Derby as well as external areas across Rolls Royce Submarines Ltd.

What You Will Be Doing

Support the Radiation Protection (RP) Function for Rolls-Royce Submarines Ltd and Rolls Royce PLC. Act as RPA to appropriate parts of the business which includes 2 Nuclear Licensed sites, 1 Authorised Site and Rolls Royce PLC plus other areas of the Submarine’s business including Industrial Radiography and work by RRSL on Submarine Enterprise partner sites:

  • Assisting the Head of Radiation Protection and the wider team SLA Radiation and environmental Protection team in developing Radiation and Environmental Protection Policy covering Health Physics, Dosimetry and Radioactive Waste for the RRSL.
  • Delivering an independent programme of assessment and surveillance activities ensuring IRR17, EPR and REPPIR compliance.
  • Providing advice, guidance, and assurance to areas within RRSL that the hazards and risks associated with Ionising Radiation are being appropriately controlled, that the business remains compliant with RP legislative, regulatory and company requirements and adopts recognised good practice So Far as is Reasonably Practicable (SFARP).
  • Supporting RRSL business requirements, including Core Manufacture, acting as an on-call Health Physics Advisor for Emergency Arrangements, provide RPA service to the MOD at the Naval Test Reactor Establishment Vulcan and Rolls Royce PLC as required.
  • Supporting the Emergency Arrangements for the business in all aspects of RP and act as a Health Physics Advisor and a RADSAFE responder on a duty roster basis out of hours.

Who we are looking for

Essential:

  • Degree level or equivalent qualification in appropriate discipline (i.e. Science, Engineering, HSE, etc.)
  • Hold a certificate of competence to act as an RPA.
  • Experienced in the design or operation of nuclear, conventional and/or hazardous facilities nuclear emergency response and their regulation and conditions within the UK (including NIA, IRR17, REPPIR19, COMAH and EPR16)
  • Experience with nuclear site licence and environmental permit conditions (and other regulatory requirements)
  • Experience of developing, planning, undertaking, and reporting independent oversight and assurance assessments.
  • Experience in Emergency Arrangements and as an on-call Health Physics Advisor.
  • Experience of RADSAFE and the transport of radioactive material

There maybe opportunities to travel to other sites for short periods (2-5 days) away from your main work station.

To work for Rolls-Royce Submarines you need to hold a Security Check (SC) clearance without any caveats to that clearance. Rolls-Royce will support the application for Security Clearance if you don’t currently already have this in place. Due to the nature of work the business conducts and the protection of certain assets, you must hold a UK nationality. Any dual nationals will require additional scrutiny and background checks prior to commencing work with RRSL.
