As a Product Definition Engineer your main task will be to produce and (where adequate capability has been demonstrated) check Component definitions (such as Model Based Definitions - MBDs) in line with Engineering Standards to meet design intent, satisfying fit, form and function of the component whilst optimising for manufacture.

As a Product Definition Engineer, you’ll play a vital role in enabling the delivery of our Group Engineering, Technology & Safety (ET&S) Strategy. This role sits within the Digital Design and Industrialisation (DD&I) Team.

This role includes an opportunity to grow technically alongside driving forward the Product Definition Capability. It also includes Supporting delivery of the automation workstreams (such as MBD) and Digital Transformation Strategy, enabling future efficiencies within Engineering.

What you will be doing

The Product Definition role includes being influential during all stages of the design cycle (e.g. creating analysis models, producing tolerance stack-ups, creating the master model and producing the component definition - MBD & 2D), manufacture of the part (e.g. supporting Design For Manufacture activities and the manufacturing buy-off process), right through to supporting parts in-service (e.g. managing and incorporating Drawing Alteration Requests, supporting concession activities and supporting in-service investigation work). Managing and maintaining data integrity is vital to this role so attention to detail is an important quality.

• Prepare, develop, and maintain the 3D master CAD model, definition (MBD/technical drawing) and relevant documentation in accordance with company procedures, engineering drawing standards, design intent (fit, form, function), manufacturing & build capability, project costs, timescales, enable downstream automation and quality requirements.

• Work as part of a multi-discipline team to ensure new and revised component definitions are fit for purpose (meets design intent, manufacturable etc.)

• Create specialised bespoke CAD models for analysis purposes and the management, update and incorporation of Drawing Alteration Requests.

• Produce tolerance stack-ups to aid new product creation & validation and to support in-service investigation work.

• Support the delivery of DD&I Automation Strategy (including Model Based Definition and High Value Digital Design). Actively promote, encourage and support the identification and implementation of continuous improvement (of tools, processes, methods and guidance material).

To be successful in this role you will need to be:

• Experienced in using Siemens NX and Teamcenter is essential and Experience in using ISO/British Standard and/or ASME Y14.5M drawing standards is essential.

• Degree level qualified in a STEM subject and experience in a relevant engineering environment. Other qualifications, in combination with relevant experience, may also be considered.

• Highly numerate with good technical and analytical skills, problem-solving ability and capable of systems level thinking.

• Have appropriate engineering experience in conceptual and detail design, detail definition methods and a good understanding of manufacturing techniques.
