Job Description

Materials Laboratory Technologist

Full Time

Some Shift working and call out support might be required.

Raynesway, Derby

An exciting role exists for a materials laboratory technologist to join Rolls-Royce Submarines. MCC supports the entire product lifecycle, from design and manufacture to in-service support for nuclear reactor plant, including materials for vessels, pipework and valves.

Why Rolls-Royce?

We’re a leader in propulsion system design and development for the Royal Navy’s nuclear submarine fleet and the sole provider and technical authority.

Join us and we’ll provide an environment where you can be yourself. An inclusive, digital-first culture that invests in you, gives you a platform for continuous learning, and access to an incredible breadth and depth of opportunities to grow your career.

We are looking for individuals who are able to lead failure investigations, run materials and corrosion test programmes to support research and technology programmes and conduct metallographic preparation/examination. The successful candidates will have an in-depth knowledge of materials science, materials engineering or metallurgy and will be able to apply their technical knowledge to a wide range of problems and material systems (e.g. steels, nickel-based alloys, hard-facings).

This is a truly unique opportunity to work with a range of unique materials, interact with nuclear design and manufacturing engineers and to deliver innovative and novel solutions to a wide range of nuclear reactor plant engineering problems. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic and able to engage at multiple levels across the business.

The successful applicant will join a metallurgical laboratory supporting new manufacture, ongoing customer support and new material development.

Support to the laboratory will require some periods of shift working and call out support where required by the business and programme needs. Shift premiums are applied as appropriate.

What we offer:

We offer excellent development, a competitive salary and exceptional benefits. These include bonus, employee support assistance and employee discounts.

Your needs are as unique as you are. Hybrid working is a way in which our people can balance their time between the office, home or another remote location. It’s a locally managed and flexed informal discretionary arrangement. As a minimum we’re all expected to attend the workplace for collaboration and other specific reasons, on average three days per week.

What you’ll be doing:

In this role there will be opportunities to assume a broad range of responsibilities including:

  • Ability to conduct metallographic preparation and characterisation via a range of techniques to international standards.
  • Application of electron microscopy (e.g. SE/BSE imaging) and microanalysis (e.g. EDS) techniques to complex material systems.
  • Manage and deliver materials failure and quality investigations.
  • Scope, develop and conduct test programmes to characterise a wide variety of materials properties, corrosion behaviour and welding development programmes.
  • Manage materials test programmes to meet cost, quality and delivery commitments.
  • Analyse and interpret data from material property testing.
  • Effectively engage with engineers from all disciplines to understand the engineering context of materials testing requirements. Communicate the technical outcome of testing to metallurgists and engineers at all levels of the business, both verbally and in writing.
  • Understanding of welding, brazing, powder metallurgy and advanced manufacturing techniques would also be beneficial.
  • Knowledge of the properties of stainless steels, nickel-based alloys, low-alloy steels, cobalt-based alloys and/or composites are all beneficial.
  • Experience working in a materials testing/characterisation laboratory or active laboratory would be desirable.

Who we are looking for:

At Rolls-Royce we embrace agility, are bold, pursue collaboration and seek simplicity in everything we do. These principles form our values and behaviours and are an essential component of our assessment process and are fundamental qualities that we seek for all roles.

  • Previous experience with nuclear materials is not required but would be beneficial.
  • We are interested in candidates who come from a range of industries such as Power Engineering, Civil Aerospace, Oil & Gas and Defence with wide and varied experience.
  • Preferably you will be educated to Degree level or equivalent in Materials Engineering, Metallurgy, Engineering or a related subject. It is also desirable to have relevant industrial experience in an engineering environment, ideally in relation to materials characterisation.

We’re an equal opportunities employer. We’re committed to developing a diverse workforce and an inclusive working environment. We believe that people from different backgrounds and cultures give us different perspectives. And the more perspectives we have, the more successful we’ll be. By building a culture of respect and appreciation, we give everyone who works here the opportunity to realise their full potential.
