What You'll Do
The Criticality Safety Officer provides technical oversight and guidance to ensure proper implementation of nuclear criticality safety requirements for a defined set of Y-12 capabilities and associated infrastructure.
Responsibilities:
- Provide technical guidance to ensure proper implementation of nuclear criticality safety (NCS) requirements to assure fissile materials are processed, stored, transferred, and handled safely so that personnel and property are protected against a criticality accident
- Verify adequate implementation of requirements and controls on equipment, processes, and procedures is established for new or revised criticality safety documents
- Implement and oversee processes to ensure compliance with criticality safety requirements and NCS command media requirements
- Review, from an operations perspective, and provide input to criticality safety documentation; assist with resolving minor non-compliances and deficiencies along with proactively monitoring trends to reduce future issues
- Develop and control NCS posting requirements
- Perform CSO surveillances
- Coordinate changes in NCS documentation between Operations and the Criticality Safety Office
- Facilitate consistency, standardization, and simplicity in the application of Criticality Safety across production operations
Accountabilities:
- To the Criticality Safety Office Manager and Criticality Safety Management & Integration Senior Director for the establishment, maintenance, and implementation of a defined criticality safety office and integration of production and engineering functions to support nuclear criticality safety for Y-12
- To the facility Production Directors for resolution of conflicting priorities, ensuring a healthy respect for Conduct of Operations principles, and interpreting policies or procedures when questions arise regarding criticality safety principles and applications
Authorities:
- Assist with the definition and/or resolution of conflicts regarding implementation of criticality safety requirements
- Assist with abnormal response to criticality safety issues when required to maintain compliance with policies and procedures governing Y-12 operations

- Bachelor’s degree: No experience
- OR Master’s degree: No experience
- OR PhD: N/A
- In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2 (i.e., Baccalaureate in engineering or related science, 2 years job-related and at least 1 year nuclear experience, or a DOE O 426.2 alternative). DOE 426.2 experience requirements can be satisfied following employment. In the interim, newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities. Preferred Job Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in nuclear safety or engineering is preferred
- Seven (7) years of relevant operations experience in areas involving NCS requirements is preferred
- Knowledge and understanding of the Criticality Safety analysis process, Conduct of Operations, Integrated Safety management, Security Programs, and other safety management programs is preferred
- Must be able to communicate well, both orally and in writing with various levels of the organization
- Must have some understanding of technical operations; knowledge of plant operations, services, and structure; Conduct of Operations; and Integrated Safety Management

Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.
