Thermal Hydraulic Design Engineer, Westinghouse Västerås
Are you interested in working with advanced technology and being part of an innovative team that supports Westinghouse’s mission to provide clean energy solutions? Do you have physics knowledge, analytical skills and do you enjoy a dynamic and international working environment? Great – you should join our team!
The Thermal Hydraulic Design team in Västerås, Sweden is responsible for thermal hydraulic design, calculations and testing for both BWR, VVER and PWR reactors. Our work provides a critical contribution to the operations and business of nuclear power plants around the world.
Our team is part of the EMEA Fuel Engineering department, which in addition to thermal hydraulic design is responsible for core design, fuel rod design, criticality analysis, materials, mechanical design, safety analysis, method- and software development and project management.
Your Day-To-Day Work
Reactor core thermal hydraulics addresses heat removal from the reactor fuel and coolant flow in the reactor core under normal operation and accident conditions. You will perform standard and non-standard reactor core thermal hydraulic analysis work for national and international customers, following and understanding approved methodologies, procedures and internal processes while maintaining focus on nuclear safety and quality. Analyses will support safe plant operation by determining design bases and limits that meet safety and regulatory criteria, quantifying thermal margins, and identifying and evaluating risks to plant safety and fuel performance. For your analyses, you will be using Westinghouse specific thermal hydraulic codes such as VIPRE-W and POLCA.
You may also be involved in development projects, in which new fuel designs are analyzed and evaluated, in testing and validation of software or in experimental testing of fuel.
The analyses performed are summarized in customer reports, which means that an ability to clearly document and describe the analyses performed is required. Good knowledge in English, both spoken and written, is essential.
Who You Are
Your academic background is Master of Science or PhD (nuclear engineering, energy systems engineering, engineering physics or equivalent) and you have at least five years working experience in the field of analysis. Knowledge and experience with Linux-systems, Fortran, C++ or Pyton is a plus. Experience with nuclear thermal-hydraulics and two-phase flow is also a plus.
You are an analytical person with a good sense of accuracy, accountability, and safety. Your communication skills are good in both written and spoken English and preferably also in Swedish, and you enjoy working both independently and in a team. As documentation of analysis results is an essential part of the work, you should also have a talent for writing reports.
