Senior EHS Specialist

We are currently seeking an Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) Specialist for our Churchill Site. The EHS Specialist must possess broad knowledge and experience in all aspects of a comprehensive Environment, Health, and Safety program to ensure the safety and protection of employees, the general public, and the environment. The role will be responsible for maintaining compliance with all applicable state and federal regulations. This position reports directly to the Radiation Safety Manager and assists with a complex radiation safety program where disciplines comingle and provides technical guidance with support from a staff of EHS / Health Physics Technicians.


 


Your Day to Day:



  • Steward the site’s Environment, Health, and Safety Program.  Assumes authority to monitor and terminate work activities related to regulatory compliance, health and safety, or environmental impact.

  • Develops, evaluates, implements, and directs environmental, health and safety policies, programs, training, and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, regulations, and requirements.

  • Prepare and submit environmental, waste and safety reporting.

  • Conduct EHS inspections and sampling.

  • Implement hazardous waste management and hazardous waste shipment programs.

  • Develops and implements strategies to reduce EHS risks at the facility.

  • Develops and maintains effective working relationships with key external stakeholders, regulatory bodies, and the local public.

  • Serve as key point of contact for EHS issues in support of the facility.

  • Ensures proper and timely investigation and reporting of EHS incidents including determination of cause and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.

  • Promote the successful integration of EHS risk management into key business operations, processes, and results.

  • Identify, analyze, and present EHS data to support monitoring and measuring to drive improvement initiatives.

  • Promotes EHS awareness throughout the organization through effective employee communications, participation, and programming.

  • Review EHS requirements for contracts / orders and advise leadership and production of EHS impacts and risks.  Assist with risk mitigation of new impacts / risks.

  • Implement site wellness initiatives.

  • Participates in Project Safety Reviews of First-of-a-Kind projects or experiments.

  • Provides EHS leadership as an active member of the four site Safety Committees: Radiation Safety, Chemical Hygiene, Stored Energy, and Radiation Safety.

  • Serves as the Chemical Hygiene Officer.

  • Manages site Chemical Inventory System for vast inventory of chemicals.

  • Ensures compliance with the Laboratory Safety Standard.

  • Assists the Radiation Safety Manager with the Emergency Response Program.

  • Provides support and direction to radiation protection and environmental safety technicians.

  • Monitor and analyze key performance metrics to identify areas for improvement.

  • Lead implementation of safety improvement initiatives.


 


What you need to be successful in this role:



  • Bachelor’s Bachelors' Degree in Safety Engineering / Sciences or similar.

  • 5 years of progressive experience in a research and development, industrial safety / health risk workplace.

  • CSP or equivalent professional certification(s) is required

  • The candidate must be vetted Trustworthy and Reliable, in accordance with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, PA Department of Environmental Protection and the Churchill Site Access Authorization Program. The ideal candidate will have familiarization or experience working in a research laboratory setting with the presence of chemical, biological, or radiological hazards.  Demonstrated experience communicating technical information to a wide range of audiences is necessary. This position is required to respond to emergencies involving radiological hazards as directed. The ability to pass illicit drug and alcohol screening is required.


Preferred Skills and Competencies:



  • Highly knowledgeable of environmental, safety and health regulations and regulatory agency interaction processes. Specific knowledge of Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection air, water and waste regulations and waste shipment is required.

  • Demonstrated attention to detail, effective decision-making in a fast-paced setting.

  • Ability to fulfill responsibilities with a global mindset.

  • Demonstrated strong analytical, problem solving and organizational skills.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing including the ability to effectively present information to workers as well as to leadership.

  • Highly knowledgeable in the methods used for hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control.

  • Strong ability to respond effectively to sensitive issues.

  • Must be able to comprehend, analyze and interpret complex documents.

  • Requires advanced analytical and quantitative skills.

  • Strong ability and flexibility to work in a team setting and lead a team when necessary.

  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, negotiation and persuasion skills.

  • Proficient in MS Office Suite and personal computer skills (required).

  • Knowledgeable of behavior-based safety principles and safety management systems.

  • Experience with Radiation Protection.
