Description

A one-year, non-ACGME accredited fellowship within the department of Radiology with focus on cardiac and thoracic imaging, interventional and elective rotations as well as time for research and participation in interdisciplinary pulmonary, cardiology and thoracic oncology conferences.


 


Requirements:



  1. Successful completion of ECFMG certification and/or USMLE Step III 

  2. Successful completion of a radiology residency 

  3. NC medical board state license 

  4. Approval and successful on-boarding from Atrium Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and the Department of Radiology.


 


Goals:



  1. Master advanced interpretive skills in digital chest radiography, CT, and MR imaging of a wide spectrum of cardiopulmonary disorders

  2. Develop an in-depth understanding of pulmonary and cardiovascular anatomy, physiology, and disease states.

  3. Learn the appropriate clinical applications of these cardiothoracic imaging modalities and their role in state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging algorithms.

  4. Gain an understanding of the physical principles and technical features of the various cardiothoracic imaging methods.

  5. Develop an understanding of image quality control issues, costs, as well as the benefits and risks to patients associated with the cardiopulmonary imaging methods.

  6. Learn advanced diagnostic imaging techniques, including multi-slice CT, high-resolution CT, cardiac CT and MR, CT and MR angiography of the heart, aorta, and pulmonary arteries; PET/CT; and 3D image display and analysis.

  7. Elective rotation to develop skill in the performance of transthoracic biopsy procedures in the chest, including indications, pre-biopsy evaluation and informed consent, post-biopsy care, and the management of potential complications.

  8. Acquire good interpersonal and communication skills, including the dictation of accurate, concise reports free of major interpretive or grammatical errors.

  9. Gain experience in becoming an effective consultant and teacher.

  10. Be introduced to cardiopulmonary imaging research, at the clinical, translational, or basic science level.

  11. Develop fundamental academic skills, including the preparation of scientific abstracts, posters, lectures, papers, and chapters.


 


 


Job Details:



  1. Fellow will take primary radiology call Monday to Friday 8 AM - 5 PM

  2. Fellow will be on every fourth weekend calls. 

  3. Fellow will interpret studies from Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Center and associated outpatient imaging centers. In addition to chest radiography, CT, and MRI imaging, interested fellows will rotate through nuclear medicine, acquiring the skills for stress SPECT performance, and the interventional radiology service, learning how to perform image guided chest biopsies.

  4. Fellow will attend and gain sufficient knowledge to staff several multidisciplinary conferences, including thoracic tumor board, interstitial lung disease and cardiology conferences (typically once in a week).

  5. Fellow is expected to present journal club once a month and present noon conference for the residents twice a year. 

  6. Fellow is expected to conduct and involve in case conference once a week.

  7. Fellow is expected to participate in the national interesting case conference once a week.

  8. Fellow is expected to work with and teach the residents and medical students.

  9. Two months of electives are provided, which can include research time for those pursuing an academic career. We encourage our fellows to become involved in research projects and present at national meetings.

  10. Fellow will communicate with ED and consultation services for reporting acute cardiothoracic imaging findings.

  11. Fellow will evaluate radiology faculty twice a year.

  12. The fellow is an ambassador of the radiology department. As such, they will conduct themselves to the highest professional and ethical standard of both the radiology department as well as the policies within Atrium Wake Forest Baptist Health.
